Our favourite recipes for St Patrick’s Day
March 14, 2014Happy St Patrick’s Day! No matter how you're celebrating this year, our lovely food and drink recipes will make it extra delicious.
St Patrick’s Day (17 March) is a joyful tribute to all things Irish. Traditionally, it’s a day spent with loved ones, enjoying delicious food, including slow-cooked beef or lamb stews, served with colcannon.
We’ve rounded up our favourite dishes for St Patrick's Day, from easy soda bread (and an even easier air-fryer version!) to hearty stews and an epic Guinness cake recipe, along with a few fun tipples.
Ireland is famous for lots of great quality ingredients, but up there at the top has to be lamb and Guinness. This gorgeous sticky lamb shank recipe brings the two together to make one of the best comfort dishes you can tuck into.
You can’t beat the smell of freshly baked bread wafting through the house. Luckily, this soda bread couldn’t be simpler – just mix it all together and whack it in the oven. No need to wait for the dough to rise! Bonus.
And soda bread just got even easier, thanks to the air fryer! Stuff it with loads of lovely cheese, top with a sprinkling of oats, sea salt and rosemary, then leave the air fryer to do all the hard work. Beautifully crusty bread in no time.
Lamb not your favourite? Try this St Patrick’s Day Guinness stew recipe instead. Here, tender skirt steak, hearty veg and creamy Guinness are slow cooked to perfection, then teamed with pearl barley and steamed green veg. Yum!
Champ is a heavenly Northern Irish concoction of creamy mashed potato and fresh spring onions – need we say more?! Jamie’s version uses watercress for extra green crunch. Serve with sausage and gravy for a St Patrick’s Day dinner of champ-ions!
Like Baileys? You’ll love this epic Guinness cocktail recipe. Irish whiskey, condensed milk, Guinness and nutmeg come together to create a gorgeous riff on a Guinness punch. Creamy, a little bit spicy and so simple to make.
The flavours of Guinness and dark chocolate make the perfect pair, and this Guinness cake recipe is a real grown-up treat. And to make it a proper St Patrick’s Day centrepiece, the sour-cream icing makes the cake look like a pint of the famous Irish stout. Cheers!
In any restaurant on Ireland’s southern coast you’ll be offered a rich and creamy seafood chowder that warms the cockles of your heart. Recreate the magic with Jamie’s sweetcorn and mussel version, then team with a nice hunk of soda bread for next-level dunking.
Big up the best of Irish produce with a hearty shepherd’s pie. Jamie’s elevated version is perfect St Patrick’s Day fare – with tender roast lamb and crispy potato, it has the most incredible texture.
Last but not least, no Irish celebration would be complete without one of these! Combining a nightcap and a pick-me-up, this amazing Irish coffee recipe is the perfect way to end St Patrick’s Day.
